It's easy to think about design. It's even possible to comment on design without designing much. But it is super hard to "do" design. Design is a noun and a verb.
The verb is the process side of things and the noun is the craftsman side of things. When we balance the process and the craftsmanship, beautiful solutions arise. That is what we focus on at Xperian Work. We're a bunch of passionate designers who push pixels, day-in and day-out. We don't see design as a commodity nor a speciality. We see design as a way of life.
Why this matters is...
We can't reduce pixels when we are paid less, we can't increase attention to details when we are paid more. We work the same way, irrespective of how we are paid, how long the project is and whom we are working with. We love efficiency and hence efficient organisations love us. We try to get to the finish line faster. We love launching stuff. We think stuff in the user's hands is far more valuable than when it is a work-in-progress pixels in our MacBooks.
We've crafted over 150 products in the last 7 years as a team and pushed 70,000 pixel-perfect screens to the world. Collectively it is 60,000 hours doing the design work we love. We don't believe in having larger teams. We bring in people to the core team only when they fit the competence levels and culture. This makes us super lean team and the number of hours available, very less!
How we do this?
We believe in sleeping well. We ensure we're a healthy bunch so that our creativity is intact. We believe in solving real problems and uplifting human lives. We're emotionally intelligent to understand where every stakeholder comes from and understand different perspectives in the team yet pushing for creative problem solving.
We're powered by common sense and raw intelligence. We use simple words and more sketches to speak. We write less emails. We love rhythms and routines. Life happens and in-between, work also happens at its best. We don't believe in the work-life bullshit. It is either work or life. We chose life. So design work is a part of our lives and hence we guard it very close to our hearts.
So whom do we work with?
We take up work only when it is interesting, pays well (competence + passion + high quality work experience is a rare combo) and is from a team who cares about design. Our career is our responsibility and we don't want to waste it on clients who don't believe in good design. Sorry! If you care about design, you'll see this team being super enthusiastic, delivering more than what is needed and making lives better by the hour.
It has taken us a long time to come here. We don't want to get back to the rat race for any reason. We want to live well, design well and die well. Looks like there are clients who believe in such a breed and we seem to be busy at all times. We take long term efforts only, as it is easy to compound our learnings over a period of time and add exceptional value to the businesses and customers alike.
